Spanish Language Program for Foreign Language Speaking Students

I. ¿What is CLE? ¿Who should enrol in it?

1. CLE is a full immersion program designed to help students to effectively communicate in Spanish and prepare them to study in Spanish any course offered by the university. Teaching techniques focus on the communicative approach to learning and studying the language.
From the first day, students start working on improving their conversational skills. At the beginning, the topics covered are very basic and as students begin to learn and become more proficient in Spanish, topics grow in complexity. Students will find themselves quickly learning new vocabulary and grammar, and improving their writing skills. They will be able to effectively use them in the everyday situations they live in class and outside class as they interact with the native speakers students.
In a very short period of time they find themselves able to effectively communicate in Spanish!

CLE is a program and an exam designed for students whose mother tongue is not Spanish and who are planning to enrol in one of the degree courses of the University. It is also designed for students who does not intend to study in the university but want to learn Spanish. For these students, the CLE program and the exam are mandatory.

The students from adventist universities members of the ACA consortium (Adventist Colleges Abroad) will be admitted only through that program and therefore, not through CLE. The exception will be those students who are planning to finish their studies in our university. The universities members of the consortium are:

• Andrews University
• Antillean Adventist University
• Atlantic Union College
• Avondale College
• Canadian University Collage
• Columbia Union College
• La Sierra University
• Oakwood College
• Pacific Union College
• Southern Adventist University
• Southwestern Adventist University
• Union College
• Walla Walla College

2. The program is divided in two different sub-programs: (1) CLE-P (for Portuguese-speaking students); and (2) CLE-LD (for other than Portuguese foreign language speaking students). The following information has been especially prepared for the latter.

3. In order to enrol in the program, the prospective student must fill the regular application form provided by the Admissions Office, and fulfil all the requirements specified by both that office and the International Students Office.

4. In all cases students will be admited as dorm students to inhance the complete cultural inmerssion. Exceptions and especial cases will be dealt in the admision committee.

II. Academic Information for CLE-LD

1. The CLE-LD program is offered once a year (starting in September), and includes 20 class hours per week during 20 weeks.

2. Attendance to the CLE course classes is mandatory. Students enrolled in the program must attend to at least 80 per cent of the classes in order to qualify for the final exam. Students attending less than 80 per cent may not qualify for the exam, and accordingly, may not be able to start a degree course program at the University.

3. Practice assignments and practice tests are also mandatory. Students must pass at least 80 per cent of the assignments provided by the CLE-LD teachers. Students who fail to do so, may not qualify for the final exam and may not be able to start a degree course program at the University.

4. Additional activities such as field trips or weekend social or spiritual gatherings are also part of the program. Students are expected to attend to at least 80 per cent of these activities.

5. Students who think their Spanish proficiency is high enough as to skip the CLE classes may do so by opting for the Spanish final exam before they enrol in the program. The University will not be held responsible if the student fails the exam and consequently can not accepted into any of the degree courses offered by UAP.

6. Once the student is enrolled in the program and starts attending classes, he/she may not drop out of the program. Dropping out will disqualify the student to take the final exam, except for certified health reasons.

7. Students must take and pass the final exam before they seek to enrol in one of the degree courses offered by the University. The CLE program co-ordinator will inform the students of the dates chosen for the exam beforehand.

8. Students who fail the final exam cannot apply for enrolling in any of the degree courses offered by the university. The minimum passing grade is 6 (six). The student with a passing grade inferior to 8 (eight) will not be allowed to take all the credits of his degree but some with the advise of the School advisor who will determine whether the courses chosen are the best options available and will advise the student accordingly. The student who gets more than 8 (eight) in the exam will be allowed to takes as many credits as he wants.

9. The student taking just one or two degree courses will anyway have to pass the CLE exam before he/she can go on with his/her degree program. Thus, it is expected that the CLE student keeps attending the CLE classes in addition to the degree courses taken. Further dates for taking the exam will be announced by the CLE program co-ordinator.

10. Any other special situation will be analized by the Academic Board of the School of Humanities once the student involved sends a letter to the Dean stating his/her problem and asking for a solution.
